In relation to wheel dimension what might be the issue? Seems a bit odd that it would have anyhting to do with the frame?

On this type of trainer speed is calculated on the number of turns of the elastogel roller (not on the wheel turns).
So, when you select the trainer in the settings, the app knows exactly the circumference to use (the roller circumference) and you don't have to set it.
